Luis Almagro asks the countries of the region to protect the Venezuelans

Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), urged the international community on Wednesday to guarantee the protection of Venezuelan citizens.

“The international community must assume the responsibility of protecting the people of Venezuela, not only in exile, but in their own country. #OEAconVzla, “Almagro wrote on Twitter.

The Uruguayan politician made the comment on a tweet by journalist Andrés Oppenheimer, in which he links to a publication in El Nuevo Herald about the Venezuelan crisis.

Oppenheimer reviewed a study by the Brookings Institution, in which they assure that in the next two or three years there will be 8.2 million Venezuelan migrants fleeing the Nicolás Maduro regime and the crisis in the Caribbean country.

“I believe that the figure of 8 million may even fall short considering the size of the crisis that Venezuela is experiencing (…) There may be up to 10 million Venezuelans who have to leave the country in the next four years,” he said. Almagro in an interview with Oppenheimer.

According to the United Nations, there are currently some 3 million Venezuelans living abroad due to the situation in their country.
