Proposal. The socialist Ramón Jáuregui proposes to sign a cooperation agreement with Haiti to stop the exodus of undocumented immigrants.
Brussels, Belgium – The socialist deputy of the European Union Ramón Jáuregui recommended to the Dominican Republic to control the Dominican-Haitian border to regulate the entry of undocumented migrants.
“The doors have to be ordered … the entrances and exits,” he said, recognizing that the country has a problem with Haitian migration.
The president of the Delegation of the European Parliament in the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly clarified that this is achieved through cooperation agreements with the neighboring country, establishing channels to identify the quota of migrants that can accept, because if they do not end up having more problems what solutions.
New agreement
He also former Minister of the Presidency of Spain (2010-2011) urged the Dominican Republic to negotiate a new trade agreement with the European Union, but bilaterally.
He affirmed that the country would benefit more if it leaves the Economic Association Agreement (EPA) signed in 2008, to engage in a new negotiation that allows it to deal with the issues of interest in a specific way.
“Undoubtedly, with an agreement so your country would get more benefit,” said the legislator, after recalling that a year ago the European Union signed an agreement with Cuba that allows it to be an ally for the economic, political and democratic transition of that nation .
The former vice president of the Basque Government (1987-1991) argued that Europe looks with much more interest to Latin America and has a position of recognition towards the Dominican Republic as a “settled, solid, peaceful, democratically stable country and improved economic growth.”
RD Exports
The Dominican Republic exported US $ 715.7 million in 2017, 14% less than 2016. The main destinations are the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Belgium. What exports the most is cocoa, avocado, mango, banana, cane rum and medical instruments.
The European Union is one of the country’s main trading partners and it is estimated that it represents 7% of total Dominican foreign trade.
It contributes 25% of Direct Foreign Investment, 20% of tourists and 20% of remittances received by the Dominican Republic.
RD can request the cancellation of the visa
Diplomacy. Ramón Jáuregui also suggested the country request the cancellation of the visa requirement so that citizens can enter the European territories, “because normally their visits are tourist and there is no immigration pressure”.
By justifying the possibility that a petition of that kind be accepted, the socialist legislator argued that his country, Spain, received almost 5 million Latin American migrants between 2003 and 2010 and have adapted well.
The legislator spoke with journalists participating in a study tour of the European Union.
