More than 4,000 families were affected by floods in Chocó

A day after it declared public calamity in Itsmina (Chocó) for the tombs affected by heavy rains, on Sunday February 24, the 24 tons of humanitarian aid sent by the National Government to the area.

The provisions that arrived at the municipalities are composed of kits for cleaning, feeding, blankets and mats.

“We have agreed with the Risk Management Unit that works that have to do with the mitigation of hydro-climatological risks in which many areas of the department are exposed are accelerated,” President Iván Duque after a meeting with the departmental authorities of Chocó to face the emergency that until now leaves more than 4,000 families affected.

In addition to committing to address the current emergency, the president was launched with the creation of a prevention plan for situations such as these are not repeated in the region.

Among the strategies are the construction of retaining walls on the banks of the rivers and the relocation of homes that may be harmful by sudden increases in the tributaries.

The flood last Saturday devastated four houses and surpassed the meter of height in several sectors of the municipalities of Condoto, Tadó, Cértegui, Medio San Juan, Iró river and Istmina.

According to the coordinator of Risk Management of Istmina, John Freddy Castillo, the number of victims could increase due to the lack of censorship to people located in the rural area of ​​that territory.

The authorities of that municipality add that in some neighborhoods the water levels in the two meters of height. Being the sector of the commerce and the communities located in the shores of the river the most adapted.

In Tadó, one of the most affected by the growing San Juan River, the mayor reported that the neighborhoods Reinaldo, El Esfuerzo, San José, San Francisco and Apolo, the emergency and was partially overcome.

After the meeting with President Mandos and other local leaders, the governor of Chocó, Jhoany Palacios, invited the National Government to continue working on infrastructure projects that generate benefits for the department and prevent this type of emergency.
