It is not known why the hackers chose to take over the website, it may have just had widely known vulnerability that made the websites easy to breach. In addition, this could just be the tip of the iceberg, and these superficial hacks of public websites could be precursors and distractions to further incursions of critical internal systems.

The websites are now displaying the error 503 Servicio No Disponsible with the contact information of the Governmental Office of Technology and Communication.

The website of the National Controller of the Dominican Republic has been restored.
