The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) keeps all 32 provinces on alert for tropical storm Isaías that is heading to the Caribbean island, and ordered preventive evacuations in the areas of greatest risk.
The agency prohibits going to beaches and practicing water sports on the entire coast of the Dominican Republic. Nor can you do recreational activities in the mountains or attend spas in rivers, canals and streams. In addition, small and medium-sized vessels must remain in the port.
The Isaías storm begins to generate heavy rains in the eastern region of the country, such as Santo Domingo, the National District and in some sectors of the municipalities of the Santo Domingo province. According to the National Meteorological Office, rainfall will continue to intensify during the storm’s passage through the country this Thursday.
Dominican Airports spokesman Siglo XXI (Aerodom), Luis José López, reported that as of Thursday morning at least five flights had been canceled due to weather conditions.
According to the director of the COE, Juan Manuel Méndez, the country has shelters for nearly half a million people, however due to the coronavirus pandemic, they will only host about 150,000 people.
Residents of the province of San Cristóbal, among the towns under red alert, begin to prepare for the passage of Isaías. Some say they will not go to the shelters arranged by the authorities, because they fear getting covid-19.
Meanwhile, the inhabitants of towns such as Moscow and Villa Progreso expressed their concern and assure that every time a storm of this type occurs, their homes flood and they lose their property.
