Luis Abinader takes office as president of the Dominican Republic

This Sunday, August 16, Luis Abinader and Raquel Peña will be sworn in as president and vice president of the Republic for the period 2020-2024, in the National Congress.

From the early hours of the morning a protocol will be exhausted in parliament that will be attended by legislators from both the Upper House and the House of Deputies.

The acts in the National Congress will begin at 8:30 in the morning with the installation and swearing-in of the new executive offices of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

A few minutes later, President Danilo Medina will go to the defiance of the President of the National Assembly, Senator Eduardo Estrella, and there he will deliver the presidential sash, and he will then place it on the new president at the beginning of the act in the assembly.

Once the acts in the National Congress have concluded, Abinader will go to the Primate Cathedral of America, where a tedeum or mass of thanksgiving will be officiated and from there he will go to the Altar of the Homeland, to deposit a floral offering.

After these traditional ceremonies, Abinader will attend for the first time invested as President of the Republic to swear in and appoint officials. Then he will offer a lunch to the guests.

This time there will not be the traditional military parade that takes place on the Malecón, nor the party at the Presidential Palace, due to the threat of Covid-19.
