China Announces “Successful” Development of Coronavirus Vaccine

The Ministry of Defense of China said in a statement on Tuesday that it had “successfully” developed a vaccine against the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes COVID-19 pneumonia, and has authorized human tests, although the text does not he specified when such trials would begin.

According to the note, the Chinese Ministry of Defense has approved human clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine developed by the Military Academy of Sciences.

The vaccine was developed by the research team led by epidemiologist Chen Wei of the Military Academy of Medical Research, reporting to the Military Academy of Sciences.

According to Chen, the vaccine – developed in accordance with “international standards and local regulations” – is designed to carry out “large-scale, safe and effective production.”

On Tuesday, several Chinese institutions announced that they will launch clinical trials in April to test the efficacy of various vaccines that the country is developing against the virus.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Education, there is on the table a vaccine based on viral influenza vectors that is currently undergoing experimentation with animals that will begin its clinical trials in April with the participation of the universities of Beijing, Tsinghua and Xiamen, as well as other research institutions, according to the state news agency Xinhua.

On the other hand, the deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, Yi Chengdong, said that Chinese scientists have developed a vaccine on the mRNA platform that will enter clinical trials also in April.

Yi noted that it has been developed based on viral proteins derived from the structural proteins of a virus.

Meanwhile, three new products used in diagnostic tests to detect coronavirus have been clinically approved and applied in Shanghai, said Zhang Quan, director of the city’s science and technology commission, today.
