COVID-19 lethality on the rise in the Dominican Republic

The new figures provided by the Ministry of Public Health on deaths and infections of the new coronavirus produced by COVID-19 in the Dominican Republic, mark an increase in the fatality of the disease in the national territory, which has been sustained in the last four days.

In bulletin # 11, corresponding to this Monday, March 30, the country appears with 901 diagnosed cases of the virus and 42 deaths, for a fatality of 5%.

General information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), regarding the effects of COVID-19, indicate that 80% of people recover without even receiving special treatment, but older adults and patients suffering from Medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems, are likely to develop serious illness. “About 2% of people who have contracted the disease have died,” says the WHO.

Since last March 20, cut for the second epidemiological bulletin issued by Public Health in the country, with 112 cases and three deaths, since the percentage of deaths was higher than 2%.

For that day the case fatality was 2.7%, although it fell to less than 2% in the following three days. But since bulletin number 8, which registered 20 deaths and 581 infections, the case fatality rate stood at 3.4% and has been growing since then.

On Saturday, the percentage of deaths rose to 4 and Sunday to 5, as it is maintained this Monday, according to Public Health reports.

The increase has been driven by the number of deaths in the Duarte province, which date has 22 of the 42 that have been registered in the country, for a lethality of 24%, according to bulletin number 11 released this Monday.

In said bulletin, the referred province appears with a total of 90 confirmed cases with COVID-19, however, the National District, with the highest number of positives to the virus, 381 to date, registers 5 deaths, for a lethality of 1%.

Just for the Duarte province, the Minister of Health, Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas, criticized that the population continues to violate the provisions of the Government, in the sense that they continue to play dominoes, vitillas and attend galleras in the streets to bet on cockfights.

He also recalled that in that province, the only one to date declares with community transmission of the coronavirus, in addition to the municipal elections held on March 16 throughout the country, there were celebrations of candidates and carnival parties with absent Dominicans, despite the messages that were already being transmitted by then, that social distancing should be prioritized.

“We are, and we guarantee today to the country that the National Health System is going and is responding adequately to the demand that is being carried out by this virus. Yes we ask all those sectors that have to give to develop the defense and the cut of the transmission, that we all have to participate and that playing vitilla and playing in the galleras and playing dominoes and other things transmission is not cut but quite the opposite ” said the minister with impetus.
