Leopoldo López, sentenced to almost 14 years in prison in 2015 and who had been serving house arrest since 2017, appeared on Tuesday with Juan Guaidó, who led a civic-military uprising in Venezuela.

Lopez told CNN en Español that he left the home prison after receiving Guaidó’s pardon, but also that he was released by a “military movement” that joined Guaidó.

Lopez is currently in the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas, confirmed the Secretary of State for Communication of Spain in a message to media this May 1.

Lopez is accompanied by his wife, Lilian Tintori, and his daughter, the message indicated.

On Tuesday afternoon, Chilean Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero tweeted that Lilian Tintori, Lopez’s wife, and daughter “entered as guests to our diplomatic mission in Caracas” and that the Venezuelan opposition leader was also with them.

Later, in another tweet, Ampuero said that, considering that the Chilean embassy “already had guests,” Lopez and Tintori had moved to the Spanish embassy in Caracas.

López and his wife have Spanish ancestry.

The entry of Leopoldo López and his family to the Spanish embassy was not confirmed by the European country until Wednesday.
