The North American Department of Transportation issued the order for local and foreign airlines. “The conditions in the country threaten the safety of passengers, planes and crew,” explains the agency

The US Department of Transportation on Wednesday ordered the suspension of all passenger and cargo flights to Venezuela from its territory, citing reports of riots and violence around airports in the South American country.

In a letter to the Department of Transportation requesting the measure, the Department of Homeland Security said that “conditions in Venezuela threaten the safety of passengers, aircraft, and crews traveling to or from that country.”

“The reasons that motivated this decision are: arrest of civilians and inability to provide security at Venezuelan airports,” said Gustavo Marcano, Counselor of the Embassy of Venezuela to the US, appointed by the President in charge Juan Guaidó.

The document explains that “there is a condition that threatens the safety of passengers, aircraft or crew traveling to or from an airport (…) the public interest requires an immediate suspension of transportation between the United States and that airport.”
