High Commissioner of UNHCR visited Cúcuta to know the situation of the Venezuelan refugees
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi visited the city of Cúcuta, in Colombia, where many Venezuelans arrive who need assistance. All that is known as Marnejis and Álvis, a couple of displaced Colombians who give shelter and food to newly arrived Venezuelans, which was described as “a true example of solidarity from the community.”
For his part Marnejis, responded to the High Commissioner, that we were also displaced by violence in La Guajira and when he is here. What is the need, we are hungry here and we are moved. They are also happening and we gave them this support. ”
During his visit to Latin America, Grandi witnessed the support provided by the Peruvian and Ecuadorian peoples, as well as the pain of the Venezuelans who have to leave everything and start from scratch. In this regard, we have appreciated this important example. “I’m here in Cúcuta for a very brief visit, but their history and the other families in this area inspire me a lot.”
Around 5,000 Venezuelans leave their country every day, many of them in need of international protection. The Simón Bolívar international bridge, which links Cúcuta, in Colombia, to San Antonio del Táchira, in Venezuela, is one of the busiest border crossings.
