Italy exceeded 10,000 deaths caused by the new coronavirus this Saturday, with 889 new deaths in the last 24 hours, the Civil Protection service announced on Saturday.

With 10,023 deaths, Italy is the country with the highest case fatality rate in the world for the coronavirus.

It has so far registered 92,472 cases, although the contagion is decreasing: + 8.3% on Thursday, + 7.4% on Friday and + 6.9% this Saturday.

In Lombardy, the region most affected with nearly 40,000 cases and nearly 6,000 deaths, the number of people hospitalized with symptoms has remained almost stable, with 11,152 cases (+15 in 24 hours), as well as that of patients in intensive care ( 1,319, +27 in 24 hours).

“In our hospitals we begin to breathe with some relief, light but relief. In all the emergency services we have registered a reduction (in patient arrivals), in some it is slight, in others it is more pronounced, ”said Giulio Gallera, head of health in Lombardy.

The Emilia-Romagna region continues to be the second most affected with more than 1.30 cases and more than 12,000 cases, specifies Civil Protection.

Still not out of danger

The head of the national health institute Silvio Brusaferro said that the country was not yet out of danger, and predicted that “we could reach the peak in the coming days.”

The new balance comes after Italy recorded nearly 1,000 deaths from the virus on Friday, the worst number in a day since the pandemic began.

A coronavirus patient, a cardiologist from Rome who has recovered, recalled his hellish experience at a hospital in the capital.

“The treatment for oxygen therapy is painful, the search for the radial artery is difficult. Other desperate patients were screaming ‘enough, enough,’ “he told AFP.

In the midst of the emergency, Italy, along with France, accelerated the transfer of coronavirus patients to Germany with the collaboration of the German army this Saturday, as hospitals in their home countries are congested.

Germany, where more than 48,000 cases of COVID-19 were officially registered and almost 400 deaths, received six patients from Italy and six others from France.

In recent weeks, French and Italian patients have already been admitted to hospitals in border regions such as Saarland or Rhineland-Palatinate.
