With more than 3,400 deaths, Spain became on Wednesday the second country in the world after Italy with the most fatalities due to the coronavirus, surpassing China, the place of origin of the pandemic.
In a week that was already predicting “very hard”, Spain counts its daily deaths by hundreds: 462 on Monday, 514 on Tuesday and 738 on Wednesday, the day with the most deaths due to this disease.
China, the country where the pandemic originated, registered 3,281 fatalities to date and only Italy, with 6,820 deaths in its last balance, is ahead of Spain.
Since March 14, the almost 47 million Spaniards have been confined to their homes, which they can only leave to go to work if they cannot do it remotely or for essential activities such as buying food or medicine.
Congress must ratify in the afternoon the extension of the state of alarm until midnight from April 11 to 12 decreed by the government, which rules out stopping all non-essential economic activity as Italy did and some regions demand.
“We are already in a situation that with the decree of the state of alarm economic activity has stopped a lot,” defended Economy Minister Nadia Calviño on RNE radio.
